Matt:

Okay, so this sounds like there’s a website offering voice work where you can go and sign up to be the voice of these media productions, whatever they are. And they will pay you a good amount to do that. It makes it sound like these jobs are just waiting for whoever signs up. Whoever wants to do it they will immediately take you and pay you that much money to do

a minute or two of script reading. But there are professional voice actors and there are non-professional but still paid voice actors who do this kind of work on a regular basis. There’s no particular reason they just need any random person who wants to sign up to do voice work, that they’re then gonna pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a few minutes for. You have to have the right voice, you have to have the right tone, you have to be able to read it right, you have to have the experience, and a place to record yourself doing it. And there are I would guess hundreds of thousands of people competing for those jobs and they’re only gonna need one person. So it makes it sound like you go to this website you sign up, you get a script, you read it for a couple minutes, and then send you a big check, and you do as many of those as you want.

I would be shocked to learn if that’s really how it works, because otherwise maybe I’ll go sign up and make thousands of dollars or tens of thousands of dollars a day by signing up for all of them, reading whatever scripts they send me. If it was that easy right, wouldn’t everybody be doing it? They’re not so my guess is it’s not that easy. It’s always aggravating to me when people come on and dangle these promises of easy fast money that anybody can earn just a few minutes when it’s not really at all true. That’s how it works or that’s what’s available. You’re just getting people’s hopes up and then they go and find out that’s not really at all how this works. I would suspect that whatever else she’s got going for 500 to 1500 bucks a day that’s working in her local community is about the same level of realism as voice work for $100 a minute. But I’d be loved to be proven wrong, but so far I find it pretty hard to believe.
