Business Advice Video:

The best conversation that I had in Money Talks was with a real estate guy, real estate developer. And he made a couple of $100 million with commercial real estate. And I told them I was like “Hey, you’re sitting on a couple hundred million like what’s next?” He looked at me said “Luke you know I spent the last 20,000 hours learning how to be a great entrepreneur. I’m gonna spend the next 20,000 hours learning how to be a great father.” So his entire life mission changed completely.

Matt’s Review:

What I would do instead of spending 20,000 hours doing only one thing and accumulating $100 million but at the cost of everything else in your life is figure out how to draw some work-life boundaries. Instead of making $100 million in 20,000 hours but ignoring your family and not knowing how to be a father or a husband or brother or son or whatever role other things that you can do in life. I would suggest cutting back on some of that work stuff and making sure you’re doing other stuff. And then you can work a little longer because you’re not completely burned out and you haven’t missed everything. But if I was to spend 20,000 hours running my business, yes, the business might be bigger. But if in that time period my kids go from being born to being 18 and I’ve missed all of that. And then I try to show up and say “Hey, guess what? I’m done with business. I wanna be your dad now.” It’s gonna be a “Who are you” and “How do I know you” and “Get away from me” cause I’d miss the first 18 years of their lives. I don’t know. This doesn’t make any sense to me. I’m not sure the moral of this story is one I would wanna take away or to try and teach anyone else. I think you should run your business in a way that allows you to both grow the business but also grow yourself. And also have balance between other things in your life aside from the business. If the business consumes you, then you’re doing it wrong in my opinion. You’re not spending your time wisely. You are prioritizing too much of one thing and not enough of everything else. And you can’t get that time back. you can’t go backwards. So really decide what’s important to you. And if you’re gonna have a family and that’s gonna be important to you, then I think you need to take some of the time away from the business. If really just having the business is the most important thing and you wanna sacrifice everything else, then don’t have a family. That’s fine. You can put 100% of your time into your business if you aren’t in a relationship, and don’t have a family, don’t have kids, don’t have anyone else you wanna connect with. Then great. it’s just you and you can spend 100% of your time in the business. But if you’re gonna try and have other things in your life then I think it’s only fair to allocate time to them. Especially if you’re talking about your relationships. Otherwise, they’re not gonna be there. And then when you finally pick your head up and stop working, you’re gonna realize it’s too late to save them.
