Business Advice Video:

People hate double standards. And it’s not difficult to spot somebody who outperforms others, works hard, and is continually progressing in their role. Versus the person who lacks the skills and competency but is given opportunities that they haven’t earned. Most people hate their jobs because of favoritism in the workplace. Truly if this is what gets perpetuated in the workplace, what is the incentive to go above and beyond? Especially when recognition and opportunities are given to the wrong person.

Matt’s Review:

So I mean that she’s not saying anything revolutionary here. What she’s really talking about here is just favoritism, that’s all that that is. If a manager has five people that they’re managing, and they’re just work colleagues with four of them but good friends with one of them. And that one that they’re friends with isn’t performing at the same level as the others but gets the same opportunities, or better opportunities, or promotion, or days off when other people are denied days off. Of course, that’s gonna build resentment. That’s going to cause all kinds of problems. It’s not the employee’s fault who’s getting the favors or getting the preferential treatment, it’s the manager. If the manager is doing that, not treating everyone equally, not having the same consequences for everybody, not giving everybody the same consideration, and promoting the person who is best for the job who’s proven the best performance who’s done the best work, then of course you’re gonna have problems. You’re gonna have people who are good quit. You’re gonna have people who aren’t good but are friends with the right people stay. And the whole business is gonna go downhill. if you’re that person showing favoritism you need to stop.

If you’re in charge of people who are showing favoritism in their management style, you need to fix it. That’s as simple and as straightforward as it can be. Or else the whole thing is going to suffer.
