Is AmSpa Worth It? A Med Spa Owner’s Guide to American Med Spa Association Membership

By Matt Remuzzi · September 9, 2026

If you own a medical spa, you’ve probably heard of the American Med Spa Association (AmSpa).

AmSpa has become one of the most recognizable organizations in the medical aesthetics industry, offering resources focused on legal compliance, education, networking, industry data, and business growth.

But there’s an important question every med spa owner should ask before paying for another membership:

Is AmSpa actually worth the money?

The short answer is yes; for most serious med spa owners, AmSpa can be worth the investment.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean every practice needs the most expensive membership tier.

The value depends heavily on the size of your practice, how complex your operations are, what state you’re located in, and how much you actually use the resources.

In this guide, we’ll break down what AmSpa costs, what you actually get, where the membership provides the most value, and which types of med spas should or shouldn’t join.

What is AmSpa?

The American Med Spa Association (AmSpa) is an industry organization focused specifically on medical aesthetics and medical spa business.

Unlike broader spa organizations, AmSpa’s resources are built around the unique legal, regulatory, and operational challenges of medical aesthetic practices.

That distinction is important.

A traditional day spa might primarily need resources around staffing, marketing, skincare products, and customer retention.

A medical spa has those concerns plus questions surrounding:

  • Medical practice ownership
  • Scope of practice
  • Provider delegation
  • Medical directors
  • Injectables
  • Lasers
  • Prescription products
  • Patient consent
  • State regulations
  • Advertising and marketing compliance
  • Telemedicine
  • Multi-state expansion

AmSpa specifically addresses these issues.

The organization currently says it has more than 5,000 member practices and coverage across all 50 states.

How Much Does AmSpa Cost?

As of 2026, AmSpa offers two primary membership levels.

AmSpa Basic: $395/years

Basic is designed primarily for individual practitioners and people getting started in the industry.

It includes:

  • State legal summary
  • One annual attorney consultation with ByrdAdatto
  • Legislative alerts
  • Live and recorded webinars
  • Preferred pricing on training events
  • Vendor discounts

The Basic membership provides answers to more than 30 medical aesthetic legal questions for your state.

AmSpa Plus: $845/year

Plus is designed more specifically for medical spa owners and practices.

It includes everything in Basic, plus:

  • More than 100 state-specific legal questions
  • Treatment delegation tables
  • Intake and consent form templates
  • State of the industry report
  • Team-wise preferred pricing for training
  • Expanded compliance resources

So the real question isn’t whether $395 or $845 is expensive.

The question is:

What could one mistake in your med spa’s legal or compliance setup cost you?

That’s where AmSpa starts to become interesting.

The Biggest Reason AmSpa is Worth It: Legal Resources

For most medical spa owners, this is the biggest reason to consider joining.

AmSpa provides state-specific legal summaries covering questions such as:

  • Who can own a med spa?
  • Who can inject fillers?
  • Who can administer Botox?
  • Who can operate lasers?
  • What constitutes the practice of medicine?
  • What treatments can different providers perform?
  • What are the rules surrounding medical directors?
  • What are the requirements for different providers?

AmSpa currently says its legal database covers more than 100 questions across all 50 states.

Plus members receive access to the full legal questions set and treatment delegation tables.

This is valuable because medical spa laws aren’t the same everywhere.

What’s permitted in one state may be restricted in another.

And even if you’ve been operating your business for years, regulations can change.

AmSpa also provides legislative alerts intended to keep members informed when laws affecting medical aesthetics are changing.

The Annual Attorney Consultation

Both membership levels currently include one free attorney consultation per year with ByrdAdatto, a law firm specializing in medical aesthetics.

AmSpa lists this benefit as a $500 value. That alone is an important consideration.

At $395 per year, the Basic membership costs less than that stated value of the attorney consultation.

However, there’s an important caveat: this isn’t unlimited legal representation.

The consultation is a resource for getting guidance – not a replacement for hiring an attorney when you need comprehensive legal advice or representation.

AmSpa itself cautions that its legal resources are general information and should not be treated as legal advice.

What About Compliance?

Legal information is useful, but practical compliance tools can be even more valuable.

AmSpa Plus includes resources such as:

  • Treatment delegation tables.
  • Intake forms
  • Consent templates
  • Legislative alerts
  • State legal information

The treatment delegation table is particularly useful because it helps owners understand who can perform particular procedures based on professional license.

That can become increasingly important as your practice grows.

For example, a solo injector may have a relatively straightforward staffing structure.

A growing med spa could have:

  • Medical director
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physician assistants
  • Registered nurses
  • Licensed vocational/practical nurses
  • Aestheticans
  • Laser technicians
  • Medical assistants
  • Front-office staff

The more people you have performing different services, the more complicated compliance becomes.

That’s one reason AmSpa Plus makes more sense for a growing practice than Basic.

Is AmSpa Worth it for Continuing Education?

Yes – but this isn’t necessarily the primary reason we’d join.

AmSpa provides live and recorded webinars, training opportunities, and educational resources covering medical aesthetics and business topics. Members receive free webinar registrations, while membership can also provide preferred pricing on training events.

Education can cover areas such as:

  • Clinical topics
  • Business management
  • Compliance
  • Marketing
  • Industry trends
  • Practice growth
  • Operations

AmSpa also produces industry data, including its state of the industry report, which is included with Plus membership.

For an owner who wants to understand where the industry is heading, not just how to perform a treatment, that information can be useful.

What About Networking?

This is another significant benefit, although it’s harder to put a dollar value on.

AmSpa provides access to a large community of medical aesthetics professionals and hosts industry events such as the Medical Spa Show.

The Medical Spa Show brings together medical spa owners, practitioners, vendors, and other professionals from across the industry.

Networking can help you:

  • Find vendors
  • Learn from other owners
  • Compare business practices
  • Discover new technology
  • Find consultants
  • Learn about industry trends
  • Build professional relationships
  • Get referrals

For a new med spa owner, this can be particularly valuable.

Sometimes the most useful answer to a business problem isn’t in a webinar or legal guide.

It’s another owner saying, “Here’s what we did”.

What About Vendor Discounts?

AmSpa also maintains a network of vendor affiliates that provide special offers and discounts to members.

These can cover categories such as:

  • Equipment
  • Software
  • Marketing
  • Insurance
  • Financing
  • Patient communication
  • Skincare
  • Professional services
  • Business services

AmSpa currently advertises vendor savings of up to $10,000 in potential value, although the actual savings will depend on which vendors you use.

And that’s an important distinction. Don’t join because the website says you could potentially save $10,000. Join because there are specific benefits you expect to use.

If one of the vendors you already work with offers a meaningful member discount, the membership could potentially pay for itself.

When AmSpa is Definitely Worth It

There are several situations where we’d strongly recommend considering AmSpa.

You’re Opening a New Med Spa

If you’re starting from scratch, you have a huge number of decisions to make.

You need to understand:

  • Ownership structure
  • Provider requirements
  • Medical director requirements
  • Treatment delegation
  • State regulations
  • Consent requirements
  • Compliance
  • Staffing
  • Marketing restrictions

Having access to state-specific resources can help you identify questions you need to answer before opening.

You’re Adding Providers

This is one of the biggest reasons to upgrade to Plus.

Once you start adding different types of providers, delegation, and scope-of-practice questions become more important.

Plus gives you access to the treatment delegation table and expanded legal resources.

You’re Expanding Into Another State

This is where AmSpa can become particularly valuable.

Medical spa regulations can differ substantially between states.

AmSpa offers multi-state executive legal guides designed for practices investigating expansion into additional states. The guides include high-level compliance information on topics such as lasers, telemedicine, and treatment delegation.

For a multi-location practice, having a starting point for comparing state requirements can save significant time.

But again, this is a starting point – not a substitute for an attorney familiar with the specific transaction and jurisdiction.

You Don’t Have a Strong Compliance Resource

If you currently have no organized resource for monitoring med spa regulations, AmSpa can provide a useful framework.

This is particularly important if you tend to make decisions like “the med spa down the street does it, so I assume it’s legal.”

That’s a dangerous way to run a medical practice. Your competitor’s business model isn’t a legal authority. State-specific research is.

When AmSpa May Not be Worth it

AmSpa isn’t automatically a good investment for everyone.

You’re a Very Small Solo Practice

If you’re a solo practitioner with a simple business model, you may not need every Plus benefit.

You may be better off with Basic or a different association.

And if you rarely use educational resources, attend conferences, or need compliance information, you may question whether even that cost is justified.

You Already Have Strong Legal Support

Suppose you already have an attorney who specializes in medical aesthetics.

They regularly review your:

  • Ownership structure
  • Medical director agreement
  • Provider relationships
  • Consent forms
  • Treatment delegation
  • Marketing expansion plans

In that situation, AmSpa’s legal resources may be less valuable to you.

You may still find the networking, education, and vendor benefits worthwhile, but don’t pay for resources you won’t use.

You’re Joining Just for the Discounts

This is another mistake.

Vendor discounts sound attractive, but they aren’t automatically valuable.

If you aren’t planning to purchase anything from AmSpa’s participating vendors, potential discounts don’t really matter.

Before joining, look through the vendor directory and identify specific discounts you would actually use.

Is AmSpa Basic or Plus Better?

For most actual med spa owners, we’d lean toward Plus.

Here’s why.

FeatureBasicPlus
Annual cost$395$845
Attorney consultation ✓✓
State legal summary 30+ questions100+ questions
Legislative alerts ✓✓
Treatment delegation table –✓
Intake/consent templates–✓
Statute of industry report –✓
Webinars ✓✓
Training discounts Primary member Full team
Vendor discounts ✓✓

The difference is $450 per year.

That’s only about $37.50 per month.

For a business with multiple providers, the additional compliance resources can make that difference relatively small compared with the potential costs of a regulatory mistake.

Our recommendation:

Solo  practitioner → Basic

Small owner-operated med spa → Basic or Plus

Growing med spa with multiple providers → Plus

Multi-location practice → Plus

Multi-state practice → Plus + legal counsel

The ROI Question: Can AmSpa Pay for Itself?

This is probably the most important question.

At $395/year, you need to recover approximately $33 per month to break even.

At $845/year, you need approximately $70 per month.

That’s a relatively low hurdle for a business.

For example, the membership could theoretically pay for itself through:

  • One useful vendor discount
  • One avoided compliance mistake
  • One useful legal consultation
  • One useful operational improvement
  • One valuable industry connection
  • One training opportunity

But don’t interpret that as saying AmSpa will automatically generate an $845 return.

It depends on whether you use it.

The membership is most valuable when you treat it as an operating resource rather than another industry newsletter.

Our Verdict: Is AmSpa Worth It?

Yes – most med spa owners should seriously consider joining AmSpa.

We’d give AmSpa a 9/10 overall for medical spa owners.

The biggest reason isn’t the networking. It’s not the vendor discounts. It’s not even the education.

It’s the combination of state-specific legal information, compliance resources, attorney access, and industry education.

Those resources address some of the highest-risk areas of running a medical spa.

The $395 Basic membership is relatively easy to justify for many practitioners, especially if you use the attorney consultation and legal resources.

For actual business owners, AmSpa Plus is the more compelling membership because it adds the expanded legal database, treatment delegation resources, forms, industry report, and team benefits.

But there’s one important distinction:

AmSpa is a resource, not your legal department.

Its legal summaries can help you understand the issues. Its compliance tools can help you identify potential problems. Its attorney consultation can help you get initial guidance.

But when you’re making major decisions involving ownership, medical directors, provider relationships, corporate structure, or multi-state expansion, you should still work with qualified legal counsel.

The Bottom Line

For a medical spa owner, $395-845 per year is a relatively small investment compared with the financial and operational consequences of getting compliance wrong.

If you’re going to join AmSpa, don’t just sign up and forget about it.

Use the legal database.

Read the legislative alerts.

Attend the webinars.

Use the attorney consultation.

Review the vendor discounts.

Take advantage of the networking.

And if you’re growing, use the resources to build better systems before problems arise.

That’s when AmSpa becomes worth it- not when you buy the membership, but when you actually use it to run a better, safer, and more informed medical spa.
